Lockers
Lockers are probably the first and best upgrade you can do to any vehicle that you plan on offroading with. If you want traction where it counts, lockers are hard to beat.
What is a locker?
A locker is basically a device in the center section of your axle that transfers power to both wheels, not just one (like a stock open differential setup).
Types of lockers (high level)
There are numerous types of lockers which can be broken down into three categories:
- Full-time locker (always on): engaged all the time
- Selectable locker: activated by the user when desired
- Automatic locker: mechanically engages on its own when needed
They vary in price from a couple hundred dollars to well over a thousand. Most lockers are axle-specific, unfortunately.
My current setup
I run a spool (always engaged) in the rear·mostly because it·s the cheapest option and the most reliable since there are no parts to fail.
In the front I run an Aussie locker (automatic). It mechanically engages on its own when torque is applied. It·s not the biggest, baddest locker out there, but I·ve had good luck with it. It has survived a few sets of gears grenading as well as a couple broken carriers. The only locker part I·ve had to replace was the center pin (once).
Selectable lockers: pros and cons
Selectable lockers are great, but they·re usually the most expensive option and often require an air supply to engage them. They·re also typically the most difficult to install.
The Lincoln Locker (cheap and effective)
There is the infamous Lincoln Locker, which is the cheapest option·only requiring a couple cans of brake cleaner, a welder, and some new gear oil. This involves welding the spider gears together (in a stock differential), essentially turning it into a spool.
I used to run this setup for years with no issues. It·s worth noting that full-time lockers are really bad on pavement and will wear tires down in record time. Not recommended for a street driven vehicle or daily driver.
